What is the importance of organ donation? Well, in India, about 1 in 10 people suffer from kidney failure and every year millions die prematurely of complications related to kidney disease. A person can lose up to 90% of their kidney function before experiencing any symptoms. Only about 4000 Kidney transplants take place per year. Out of that, only 1% are cadaveric kidney transplant. The need of the time is to increase the awareness for cadaver organ donation.
Earlier in June 2016, Gujarat government announced the support for organ donation and released the message to the people encouraging them to go for organ donation. According to the message, people at the time of applying for driver’s licence can commit to save a life by opting for organ donation. In case of any accidental death, authorities can identify person’s desire to donate his/her organ through the licence. This will help save life of someone who is in desperate need of an organ.
